Diagnoses and Symptom Video Education

Personalized patient education based on their care.

Availability: Vital Emergency · Vital Inpatient · Vital Urgent Care

We use ICD-10, HCPCS/CPT codes, and the patient's reason for visit to assign relevant education to the patient. We evaluate the patient's diagnosis codes to understand their health condition and associated symptoms, as well as their HCPCS/CPT codes to identify the specific medical procedures or services that they have received. Our algorithm considers the patient's reason for visit to identify any additional factors that may impact their health and well-being.

For example, a patient who comes into the ED with "dizziness" as their reason for visit and was subsequently diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes (ICD-10 code E11.9) and underwent a blood glucose test (CPT code 82962) would see education covering the following topics:

  • Healthy eating habits for people with diabetes

  • How to properly monitor blood glucose levels

Patients are able to read or watch these videos and provide feedback on the relevance of the video.

Video Types

As we use several data sources to prescribe videos to patients, there are different triggers that add videos. The types of videos that we add for each of these triggers are defined below.

Video data trigger

Timing

Types of videos added

Reason for visit

Videos are added to the Learn page when we receive the patient's reason for visit, which generally occurs at registration.

We only add videos that are categorized as symptom videos.

Diagnosis code

Videos are added to the Learn page when we receive a new diagnosis code, which generally occurs after the secondary assessment step.

We add any video (in any category) that matches the diagnosis code.

Procedure code

Videos are added to the Learn page when we receive a new procedure code, which generally occurs later in the visit after the procedure has been completed.

We add any video (in any category) that matches the procedure code.

Vital Urgent Care: Reason-for-visit videos are also organized into playlists (for example, a "Respiratory" playlist and a "Head & Neck pain" playlist). Reasons for visit are mapped to the closest playlist, e.g. "Migraine" or "Headache" map to the "Head & Neck pain" playlist.
