Today's Care Timeline

A step-by-step timeline of an inpatient stay.

Availability: Vital Inpatient

In this step-by-step guide, patients can view information about their stay and what to expect. They can see completed and upcoming steps such as nurse and doctor assessments, medication timing, meal order cut-off times, and diagnostic tests. Inability to predict what will happen next, and a lack of control over what happens, can cause stress. The guide helps patients see what's coming and brings some sense of control over what will happen during their hospital stay.

Lab results

Today's Care Timeline shows completed, in-progress, and upcoming labs and imaging. Selecting one of these results takes the patient to the Your Labs & Imaging page.

Food ordering

Patients can order a meal by clicking a meal request link in the step-by-step guide. The link takes them to the meal order service request (see Service Requests). This reduces the need for staff members to collect meal orders from patients.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are the full note requirements to generate a Care Summary?

  • Must have at least one provider note

  • Notes must be from the last 24 hours

  • Must have either:

    • At least two notes from enabled sections (Assessment and Plan, Diet, Goals, Subjective, Orders and Labs), or

    • Up to two complete provider notes if section coverage is insufficient

What is the full list of requirements that must currently be met to generate a Care Summary?

  • We trigger Care Summary generation at 9 am local facility time every day.

  • If this full list of criteria is not met, we continue to check for new relevant provider notes every hour. If at any point the criteria is met, we generate a new Care Summary for the patient.

  • After 10 hours (7 pm facility time), if we still have not received sufficient provider notes, we stop trying to generate a Care Summary for that day. We then try again at 9 am the following day, repeating the same process.
