Visit Overview

How the app guides patients through their visit steps.

Availability: Vital Emergency · Vital Urgent Care

The visit overview guides the patient through the steps of their visit. Which steps appear depends on the data feeds available for the facility. The display is tied to wait time estimates: for fully integrated facilities, the overview shows every step below, marking steps already completed and showing progress on the current step based on wait time estimates (see Wait Time Estimates).

For each step, a short description helps the patient understand what to expect:

Visit Step Name

Visit Step Description

Initial Assessment & Triage

During triage, a nurse takes the patient's vital signs and makes an assessment of the severity of their symptoms. This determines how quickly the patient needs to be treated.

Move to Treatment Area

The patient is moved from the waiting room to a treatment area where an in-depth assessment and treatment will take place.

Assessment & Treatment

During the assessment, the care team takes an in-depth history, performs a physical examination, and orders additional tests if needed. The patient's treatment is initiated at this point.

Findings & Next Steps

At this point, the care team shares their findings from the evaluation and testing with the patient. They discuss next steps and treatment options.

Admission, Discharge or Transfer

Once the patient's disposition has been decided, this step shows what will happen to the patient next. They will be admitted to the hospital or transferred to another facility if further treatment is necessary, or discharged if no further treatment is needed. There is a 30-minute time buffer before this step displays, giving the care team a chance to speak to the patient first.

Per setting: Vital Urgent Care shows a simplified, three-step version of this journey, Initial Assessment, Assessment & Treatment, and End of Visit (discharge, or transfer to another facility if further treatment is necessary). It does not include a separate "Move to Treatment Area" or "Findings & Next Steps" step, and disposition is framed simply as the end of the visit rather than admission/discharge/transfer.

Visit step automation

As a patient progresses through their visit, they are automatically moved through each step shown above. All steps progress automatically based on data integration with the facility.

Visit step education

Each step in the visit overview contains education to help patients understand more about what to expect. When a patient clicks on a step, they're taken to a page explaining what to expect, along with a video providing the same explanation in video format.
