Helping Patients Save on Medications with GoodRx

Filling prescriptions after a hospital stay shouldn't feel like a financial guessing game. With this release, Vital now shows patients their GoodRx coupon prices alongside their estimated insurance costs; right in the discharge summary, so they can leave with a clear plan for getting their medications.

Here's what's new.

GoodRx Coupon Prices, Shown at the Right Moment

The moment of discharge is when medication decisions get made. Patients are handed a list of prescriptions and sent home; often without knowing how much anything will cost or where to get the best price.

Vital's discharge summary now includes a Medications section powered by GoodRx. For each prescription, whether newly ordered or an existing home medication to be refilled, patients see the lowest nearby GoodRx coupon price at a local pharmacy. One tap takes them to GoodRx to compare pharmacies and get their coupon.

Prices are searched near your facility's ZIP code, so results reflect what's available in your patients' community.

A Smarter Comparison, Personalized to Each Patient

Not every patient benefits equally from a GoodRx coupon. For some, their insurance copay is the better deal, especially for common generics. Vital surfaces the right comparison for each patient based on their insurance type.

Patients confirm whether they have Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurance, or no insurance, and whether they've met their annual deductible. Based on that, we show the estimated copay or coinsurance range for each medication alongside the GoodRx price, making it easy to see at a glance which option costs less.

When insurance provides the better price, we say so plainly. When GoodRx saves money; which happens roughly 50–60% of the time, we make that clear too, with the estimated savings displayed next to each medication.

Savings depends on whether you are using a co-pay vs. co-insurance. Vital calculates this difference to ensure you know when to use a coupon.

Built with Patient Privacy in Mind

No protected health information is shared with GoodRx. When Vital queries for coupon prices, it sends only the drug name and your facility's ZIP code, nothing that identifies the patient.

Pricing is provided by GoodRx and displayed with their logo so patients understand the source. Terms and conditions are accessible directly from the medications screen.

Simply present your GoodRx coupon at a pharmacy instead of insurance to get the discount.

Easy to Enable, or Opt Out

This feature is available to all clients with the Medication Referrals capability enabled. There's no sign-up or separate contract with GoodRx, Vital handles the integration directly.

If your facility has an in-house pharmacy or prefers not to surface external pricing, you can opt out at any time. Reach out to your Vital account team to get started or to ask any questions.
